When the “old Emily” was evacuated for demolition in 1982, the elderly were temporarily transferred to other homes – some of Louis Trichardt’s homes, the weaknesses to Van Rensburg Tehuis, some to family and 25 moved to a plot near the Wonderboom Airport – what we called “Makeeripas”. With this delight in Makeeripas, there has already been a feeling of a large family between the inhabitants. In September 1983, members of this “family” have already been overtaken to the unclear “New Emily”, together with Mrs Kitty Roos, the well-known Social Worker of the Monuments Houses, to supervise the cleaning of the place and all new supplies received.
The NHSV ladies helped in turn – curtains were cut, made and hung, all the floors were “stripped” and polished, the built-in closets were washed, the beds were all covered with new bedding, dishes were unpacked and washed.
In October 1983 the rest of the “old” inhabitants began to come back – The weaknesses involved the first and second floors, the third floor was the wheelchairs, the fourth floor those who walked with crutches and walking frames, the fifth and the sixth floors were the people who could help themselves. Many of them offered help by helping to cover tables.
On November 27, 1983, the new building was commissioned as a residence.
In 1996, the hostel was converted into elderly housing, which still operates independently.
We also do not like dreaming here. There is still a great need for housing, and we are planning to build another 13 apartments early in 2002. The first intruders will take over at Kismet December 2003
Housing is provided to the elderly and includes apartment accommodation and room facilities, which include 2 meals (breakfast and lunch).
